Spain’s election highlights its polarization problem. Four decades after Francisco Franco’s death, and fuelled by resentment over Catalonia, Madrid’s two-party system has fallen apart. Spain now has five major parties split into increasingly antagonistic left and right blocs that seek to portray each other as an existential threat to Spain’s future.
