Sleepwalking through the war

We must seriously ask ourselves why we have not been able to avoid this conflict, why we can’t stop it by spending all the diplomatic wisdom that the West has earned in 77 years of balanced world order. Left to themselves, it’s difficult for the two parties to find the terms of a settlement, as each of them insists on maximalist requests. But politics very often is not between bad and good, but between bad and catastrophic.
