On September 18, 2014 a referendum on Scottish independence from the United Kingdom took place. The “No” side won, with 2,001,926 (55.3%) voting against independence and 1,617,989 (44.7%) voting in favor, with a turnout of 84.6%.  Inspired by this example, a non-binding Catalan self-determination referendum, also known as the Citizen Participation Process on the Political Future of Catalonia, was held on November 9, 2014.
