Losing friends

The civil war has swung wildly. Ethiopia’s relations with Sudan have soured, leading to border clashes. The prime minister’s decision to cozy up to Eritrea’s dictator has divided the regional bloc IGAD. Even more spectacular is the falling out with the West. This capricious geopolitical approach has alienated foreign leaders with a string of unkept promises, precipitating the once essential Western ally into a growing isolation.
