It generates oxygen, provides food, preserves biodiversity and creates cultural and economic opportunities, the ocean is Earth’s largest ecosystem, 90% of the living space for species on the planet. It absorbs about one-quarter of carbon emissions emitted to the atmosphere annually, so regulating the planet’s concentration of C02. But it comes at a cost for the oceans and life within it, threatened by chemical pollution and acidification.
