Emissions are affecting the thermosphere – the upper layer of the atmosphere where most satellites orbit – to cool and contract. It reduces atmospheric drag – which usually helps to pull space debris back into earth’s atmosphere where they burn up – crowding key orbital paths and escalating the risk of satellite collisions.
