Neither the US nor Iran, for all their rhetoric, want a wider conflict. But their race for regional influence will not disappear. For now Iran is in a box. It has three choices: to resist while its domestic economy suffers, to launch an unlikely large-scale attack on Americans or enter into serious negotiations.
