The party-hopping, the rootlessness of elected officials, the blurry line of parties and the creeping popular discontent puzzled the political landscape of a Brazil split in two. Making sense of the January 8 riots is much trickier than portraying them as emulating Capitol Hill. Prosecuting law-breakers is a duty, abusing the law to stifle political adversaries is something else.
